By Lauren Ennis

Apple’s iOS 10.3 update is officially rolling out today, following seven beta releases of the update which were trailed over the last number of months.

While some of the new features are less significant than others, here is a quick run-down of the main updates.

The most important thing for Apple users to note is that they need to back- up their device before installing the new update as iOS 10.3 comes with an all-new file system.

All new- file system

The most important thing for Apple users to note is that they need to back- up their device before installing the new update as iOS 10.3 comes with an all-new file system. The new system is optimised for flash, solid-state-drive storage and better encryption.

Find My AirPods

One of the main tweaks made in this update allows people to find their AirPods more easily. The wireless earbuds which are commonly lost can now be paired to the Find My iPhone app which will keep track of the earbuds and allow you to easily track them. It will let you see where you last had your AirPods synced on a map.

Siri Payments

Siri will now be granted access to any payment apps on your device allowing users to make payments by voice activation. Users can also use their voice as a control to check the status of bills to reduce time spent searching manually.

Podcast Widget

The iOs 10.3 update also introduces a new Podcast widget to the Control Centre. This new feature allows for quick access to your favourite broadcasts and lets you quickly launch into the next one on your list.

To add the Podcast widget to your device:

  • swipe right from the Home Screen
  • scroll down past all existing widgets
  • tap ‘Edit’
  • tap the green ‘+’ sign beside the Podcast widget.

Apple ID profile

Once you install iOS 10.3 you will immediately notice a new section in Settings that displays your name and your photo. This new section stores all of your most vital information that is linked to you iOS device.

It includes Apple ID, iCloud and iTunes information and App store settings. It also allows you to update your payment information, set up Family Sharing, check your iCloud storage, see all of the Apple devices that are registered to your Apple ID.

Some other features of the new update include:

  • CarPlay will display shortcuts in the status bar for your last used apps
  • CarPlay will give you access to ‘Up Next’ in the Apple Music Now Playing Display
  • Hourly weather updates in Maps
  • Faster changing app icons
  • Ability to write in-app reviews
